As from today, new and existing customers of Virgin Media will be able to enjoy the freedom of being able to connect to the internet wherever they are with Virgin Mobile Broadband . This is company’s first attempt at offering this service and as it stands the service will stand up to what is currently being offered by the other mobile broadband providers. The service can be ordered either by visiting the Virgin website or for a practical demonstration the Virgin mobile broadband service will be available through the Zavvi retail outlets, these used to be the Virgin Stores. Virgin are advertising their mobile broadband as having connection speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps, although T Mobile which is the network that Virgin mobile broadband uses has an average speed of around 2.1 Mbps and this is in London. The current deal is based on an eighteen month contract, for which the customer will receive a free USB mobile broadband modem together with a 3 Gb monthly data allowance, but should the customer creep over the data limit, this is going to cost an extra £15 per Gb. Virgin, estimate that 3 Gb should give the user enough scope to send two thousand emails, surf the web for a hundred hours and download a hundred two minute videos, but it is easy to see how one could go over the data limit.
