Toss N’ Turn: Hair Loss No Match for Medical Wigs, and a Best Friend’s Advice

Posted on Thursday 9 July 2009

Most couldn’t believe the beautiful and confident Colleen Sharp, my high school BFF, could wear wigs. Her terrific hair and fashion flowed in sync with her attitude. But surprise surprise. There’s no doubt “Lady Fabulous” is still the center of attention for her impeccable looks. Not many in town realize she dons wigs. They work well.

Back in the day as youths finding our way in the hill country, we regularly took turns winning Miss “SCH” four years running. But in college her alopecia took its toll and her hair wouldn’t be the same. I mentioned some human hair wigs. Whatever, she shrugged it off. Unfazed by medical hair loss, she aggressively unveiled her threadbare confidence.

At her boyfriend Jacob’s rugby game, we ate nuts till a numbskull accidentally flung the orb (or whichever thing that is) towards the fans. Quick on her feet, she tried to get it when her head scarf flew right off, unveiling her hair (or lack thereof). Undisturbed, she walked over and delivered it right back at him. What’d I tell ya about her spunk?

That said, nobody is perfect. Not too long after we got together for a game of bridge, the day she sat me down and revealed that she would rather do without hair out of bitterness. She missed her natural hair too much to look at women’s wigs, even if she wanted her hair back. Suddenly she miss invincible became beet pink in the face and begged that I it was silly. So I did.

We got so worried about her. Shortly after, I IM’d with her about getting her a new wig. Eventually we ended up with the perfect solution: we’ll think of wigs as fashion, and we love fashion. Wigs for the both of us, on me!

We had a great time, floored by the options. She never knew that human hair wigs could be so prevalent for beautiful people and famous actors. These lace front wigs made her so lovely. Personally, I put together a comprehensively contemporary set of outfits around my synthetic wig. We stand together, and that will surely endure. Recently she sent me her thanks for reuniting, and explained it invites a new attitude for many occasions. It’s heartwarming to see little miss attitude reclaim her beauty. Can’t wait to see that infamous “toss ‘n turn” again.
