Learn the Art of Prose

Posted on Monday 8 June 2009

As time drifts on it can dawn on you that you just don’t operate as culturally as you did when you were once young. You wake up to the smell of burnt toast that you enjoy, before stumbling to work, maybe read a paper then straight into the day’s tasks. These days can pass with metamorphic tendencies to turn into years. To break up the cycle and offer something up that deserves your intellectual engagement would be to go and see London chamber music at King’s Place. It’s a brilliant new venue which plays host to a wide range of arts.

On Sundays there is a spoken word event. These weekly gatherings entail a large group of people getting together to think and discuss current affairs, prose or selected topics in a way that has much more substance than you would perhaps find if such topics took place on question time.

Although you might think you have a mundane life of getting to work, cooking a meal and then retiring to bed to retire many years later, even this type of life experience can reveal elements of beauty when analysed. Whether it be something as ordinary as sitting in a restaurant looking out the window or even getting the stains out of your favourite shirt after a night out. It is these little segments of life that are discussed at these weekly meetings.

The atmosphere is welcoming to all from the professional poet who even thinks of borings tasks such as washing up in elaborate prose; to the local milkman that must do a huge amount of contemplation on their rounds. After a few visits of going you’ll find you can easily get more involved in conversations around topics and participating to a higher degree on each visit.

The genres of topic covered range from anything that has ever been talked on this planet, or anything that has been written on paper. It can really broaden your horizons and will definitely be a refreshing experience. You may have turned your nose up at such an evening in the past, all I can say is, give it a try and I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised.

The beginning of the week is a brilliant time to discuss topics in depth. Your head is still in the weekend, so it’s nice to do something to get you thinking. These sessions will make you aware how relaxing listening to prose or speaking prose actually is.
