Information Technology Sector May Foster Economic Growth

Posted on Tuesday 18 August 2009

One third of the population of Europe has never had the experience of going online, according to the latest report by European Commission. The news is quite unexpected, considering that technology has developed so much that with a laptop dongle you can now access the internet from anywhere you want by using mobile broadband.

Usually it is the older or the poor people who fall in this no-internet category. Moreover, the number of such people is declining, as more and more people are now utilizing broadband services for various reasons. Last year the percentage of people not using the internet was around 40%, and the drop in this number is encouraging.

The report also says that the Information Technology sector has been less affected by the economic meltdown that has swept the world. Thus, it can be of great assistance in further economic growth, considering that the number of people using the internet is growing every year.

European Union Commissioner for Information Society and Media, Viviane Reding, added that while there is a good possibility of assisting other sectors though digital technology, it would require certain incentives from the European governments. There are many policies, which currently block the path to growth, and governments must ensure that these blocks are removed so that the sector can become sustainable and create further employment for the citizens of European nations.
