De La Salle University proved that it is a top competitor in badminton as both of its men’s and women’s teams won their semifinal matches and made their way to the finals of the UAAP Season 72 badminton competition. The event was held at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall last weekend.
The women’s team successfully defeated Adamson 3-2 in the semifinals. The players will raise their Yonex badminton racquets University of the East in the finals. The latter booted out defending champion Far Eastern University in the semifinals.
De la Salle’s Geli Ramos, Deska Calimlim and Danica Bolos disposed Lovely Sawada 21-12, 21-6, Jubie Vallarta 21-12, 21-9 and Isabel Vallaran 21-19, 21-18 respectively to earn their berth in the finals.
University of the East, on the other hand trounced the defending champions in a straightforward manner. Racquel Guerrero and Fatima Cruz defeated Jennifer Cayetano and Diomalyn Dayao in a close doubles match 21-13, 21-17 which eventually determined the victor.
In the singles matches, Guerrero outlasted Cayetano 19-21, 21-13 and 21-17 while Cruz defeated Diosan Abangan 21-14, 21-13.
The men’s division featured La Salle defeating University of the Philippines 3-2 in the semifinals. Meanwhile, University of Santo Tomas ousted erstwhile leader Ateneo de Manila 4-1 to progress to the finals.
The exciting finals match in both divisions will take place later this week. The champion will have the distinction of giving pride and glory to the school that’s represented.
