Bermuda’s Tarpon Hole

Posted on Saturday 19 September 2009

We have been traveling to the Caribbean every summer for the past few years for our annual vacation. We love to go snorkeling and we are certified scuba divers too. We make it a point to go fishing at least a couple of times whether we are in the Bahamas or the Cayman Islands.

This year we decided to go to Bermuda to explore the world’s northernmost coral reefs and the reefs and ship wrecks that lie scattered around Bermuda. .Friends who are into diving talked glowingly about water clarity and excellent visibility divers and urged us to go to Bermuda. We are glad we took their advice and spent two glorious weeks there. The variety of corals and sponges and the wealth of marine life that one gets to see is amazing. Tarpon Hole, near Elbow Beach off the south shore became our favorite diving site. Staying at Elbow Beach Hotel, we found Tarpon Hole conveniently close and went back again drawn by the beauty of the yellow pencil, elkhorn and star coral that make the large breakers their home.

For the sheer number and variety of fish you encounter, nothing beats the Aquarium.. Swimming through the underwater arches formed by the coral reefs, you can see Cowries, glass-eyed sweepers, lizard fish and or have a curious tarpon follow you around. Since we had already experienced this at Tarpon Hole, where large schools of Tarpon gather, we swam around unafraid of these large friendly creatures. We were lucky enough to spot a turtle and a couple of eagle rays too.

Snorkeling in the Three Sisters site where the visibility is great, we saw snappers, barracudas and even octopus. We encountered these species on our dive at the Constellation shipwreck site as well along with speckled eels and schools of Parrot Fish..

For those who can’t spare the time to dive at more than one site, Tarpon Hole is an ideal site to explore, with large variety of marine life, its soft corals and sea fans, caves and tunnels.
