Caps Gowns
In the United States, the first time caps gowns were worn at a graduation ceremony was in 1894. The cut, material and style were standardized by the Intercollegiate Code in 1895. Different colors of caps gowns were established for different disciplines. For example, the bachelor’s gown is untrimmed and has pointed sleeves while the masters gown is untrimmed but with closed sleeves in an arc shape. Additionally, the cap should only be made of black rayon, cotton poplin, broadcloth or silk so as to match the gown. Velvet caps are reserved for doctorates. Even though the cap gowns are standardized in the United States, they are diversified in Europe.
